That has been done by choice and not by necessity, as I’m not a furniture seller but a furniture designer and an interior designer. Every client is a different individual with different taste, choice, and budget. Choice of luxury also differs from client to client, so why should I open a store and force people to buy whatever inventory I have. I would rather prefer to create different concepts for different people, form a story of their lifestyle around their furniture rather than selling what I have invested in. Being an artistic designer, I prefer to work on diversified design rather than making few designs with limited options. There is no boundary of creativity and creativity can only be formed when you deal with every client as a different individual. There are so many furniture stores all around where people can go and buy from, but when they come to me, it is my duty to expose them to different options and a different material for a different look. If I have a store, I would have a particular style and limited options as that would be as per my style and will try to gather whatever is available in the market to get into the rat race of becoming a seller then a creator.
I believe that a creative designer should have a small display to show the quality and theme or a concept but not a showroom. Instead of making a huge investment on showroom I would rather be more experimental and keep my investments low so that I can sell particular design at many competitive prices than the market as my overheads are less. I do not want to be under a pressure of meeting my targets, rather I would love to spend my time in creating something new and interesting which can satisfy an artist in me.
Instead of increasing my network base I would prefer to create a limited client base with good work. The best designs come from open communication about likes and dislikes and can happen only if the client sits and discusses the details with me. But, if I will have a display one can only pick up a particular stuff with my point of view and this cannot be called concept designing. Concept designing is about choice, colours, materials, sizes, and shapes within given space. I prefer to induce my clients to visit all aspects of designing for excellent outcomes. So, why to specialize in one kind of design and not explore all new ideas to create something unique and wonderful with my trained eye and excellent visual storytelling that would draw the attention of my client to have wonderful and individualistic experience. Interior designing and furniture designing needs huge investments, hence these tasks should be executed well with all uniqueness for which designers are supposed to be hired.
I do not say setting up a store is wrong. I just believe that it would create a uniformity in my designs which is not at all appreciated in designing the world! My clients deserve the best and that can only be seen through my working criteria and skills polished with years of experience and not by a showroom, isn’t it?
